Graduation Party Crackers

Graduation FAQs

Graduation Party Crackers by Elves' Best

Did you Know?

In hard times, early colleges in the U.S. were forced to accept payments
such as cotton, sheep, pewter, and food rather than hard currency.
Most U.S. colleges were constantly on the verge of insolvency.

The first Greek student society, Phi Beta Kappa
(“Love of learning is the guide of life”)
was founded by John Heath in 1776
at the College of William and Mary.
Heath was initially declined admission in Latin-Letter fraternities.
The society chose Greek letters because Heath was the best Greek scholar on campus.

The graduation cap was initially a “hood”
and is believed to date back to the Celtic time
when Druid priests wore capes and hoods to symbolize their intelligence.
Historically, academic dress for faculty or students was clerical dress

It's thought that the practice of chucking one's cap to the heavens
at the end of the ceremony started in 1912
at the U.S. Naval Academy's graduation.
For the first time the Navy gave the newly commissioned graduates
their officers' hats at graduation,
so they no longer needed the midshipmen's caps
they'd been wearing for the past four years.
To show how pleased they were,
the new officers tossed their old headgear up in the air.
Other students heard about the practice and followed suit.

Christmas Cracker and Card history at the Victoria and Albert Museum

If there is one thing this Cracker Elf is determined to do before too long, it is to visit the Victoria and Albert Museum in Britain.  I would most specially love to see their historical Christmas cracker collection. Here are a few items shown on their website:

"This card is a reproduction of an 1843 card, commissioned by Sir Henry Cole, the Museum’s first director. It combines two traditional Christmas themes. The central illustration shows three generations of a family raising a toast to the recipient of the card, and the outer, less colourful images show acts of charity, and giving to the poor."
